Last year Council Bluffs, Iowa, selected a black squirrel, Chipper, as the city’s official mascot, and last week celebrated his “first birthday.” More than 300 people attended.
Why a squirrel mascot?
“Black squirrels have long been associated with Council Bluffs.”
And why the name Chipper?
The name “Chipper” comes from the Native American word chitmunk, which later became chipmunk, referring to the small, furry animals. “Chipper is a good choice for a name and is well liked by children and adults,” said Kathy Fiscus, director of special projects for the Convention and Visitors Bureau.
