I googled squirrel stories and saw the following reference:

The firemen moved the baby squirrel to an ambulance, and gave the little guy some oxygen, and as the news story states: “The squirrel perked up and was...

So, I clicked on your website and cannot find it any where. Do you know the story I am talking about.

I send squirrel stories to a group of friends once a month and I thought that would be a good one to look at.

THanks.

Hello - We found and rescued a baby squirrel after a storm damaged a lot of trees in our neighborhood about 6 weeks ago. He is thriving and we are preparing him for release in the next couple of weeks. Although we will miss having him in our home, it is clear that a house is no place to contain him long term.

He has been such fun for our family, and what an education! He wrestles and plays, and makes different noises depending on whether he is hungry, tired or wants to play, and comes when called at least as well as a cat does. He is an almond fanatic, and can unzip a backpack pocket or open a plastic drawer to get one.

I have never really noticed squirrels other than vaguely registering that there seem to be a lot of them 'around,' but now I find that I am intrigued with their antics and habits, and often stop to watch them at play. Maybe a little 'obsessed' even, like (I'm sort of relieved to find) some others commenting here! So, we would like to be able to identify him in the future among the other squirrels playing in our trees. Does anybody know if there is a safe way to band or mark a squirrel?

Thanks!

After retiring from teaching, I opened a B&B two years ago and call it the Squirrel's Nest. We had a nest of squirrel's in our attic prior to our penthouse suite addition. It is a rainy day today and I was internet surfing and came across your website and found it delightful.

I think what can be learned from this post in particular and the subsequent comments is that education is key. Because much like the gun lobby, the healthcare lobby, etc. many many people make choices based on opinions rooted in emotion rather than facts and education. Feelings, morals, religion, non-religion, lifestyles, etc. all play a part of our opinions of course, but there really needs to be more education of the facts in all discussions.
The facts are that it is true that hunting is a means of population control for very specific reasons that are beneficial to both man and animal. It is true that hunting of all types of legal "huntable" game is responsible for a majority of conservation efforts all across the country. It is true that there is still very much a need for hunting. Not everyone has the resources to buy food at a grocery store. It is true that a lot of store bought meat is chocked full of steroids and additives making fresh game a healthier alternative in some cases.
So, while I respect your opinion of squirrels and squirrel hunting, I think perhaps your opinions MAY be based on more feelings and less facts. Just my guess. Thanks for letting me join the discussion.

What don't you buy or construct a simple box and put it in a tree with hay and sunflower seeds. Hopefully the wily little squirrels will use the box to keep warm and have their babies. I have never had any problems with them in my engine or anywhere other than my backyard. And I feed them well. :)

Saw a black squirrel the other week in Kiel..Germany. Very beautiful and very quick. Has anyone else seen them in Germany. I live in Leipzig which has the red squirrel as predominant..not seen a grey or black squirrel here. The reds are very cute and are still the most attractive.
